Workshops

Please click on the links below to learn more:

  • Workshop A: Increase confidence levels in inspection data accuracy
  • Workshop B: Intelligent Pigging (IP) technology for meeting regulatory requirements
  • Workshop C: Improving processes for effective corrosion and cracking prevention by implementing advanced protection and repair solutions
  • Workshop D: Improving maintenance and rehabilitation techniques applied to aged pipelines via deploying new age technological and strategic solutions

Sunday 22nd February

09:00 - 12:00 Workshop A: Increase confidence levels in inspection data accuracy

LIN SCAN will present a software package with integrated pipeline inspection data with 3D view capability of all inspections (including field dig up measurements, pictures, repairs, etc) as well as identifying individual anomalies in each inspection survey. A second software package will optimize the accumulated information of all runs and produce a “present pipeline status report”. This optimized information in the “present pipeline status report” will have a higher confidence level of anomaly sizing than the information in the individual inspection reports. The optimized information will also form the basis for any computer modelling activities.

At this workshop you will learn about:

  • Optimizing data quality from multi-inspection surveys
  • Working with inspection data
  • Presenting the inspection data to management
  • Risk assessment
  • Stretching the pipeline live span as long as is economically justified

You will leave the workshop with a greater understanding of:

  • Pipeline inspection applications for maintenance purposes
  • Choosing inspection technologies
  • Keeping pipelines alive economically
  • GIS applications

Expert Workshop Leader:

Cees Cornelis Bal
CEO
LIN SCAN

Mechanical engineer with 40 years Oil & Gas industry experience in the following sectors:

  • Engineering, designing, constructing and maintaining pipelines
  • Providing emergency repair equipment and services
  • Cleaning and inspecting pipelines
  • Assessing inspection results

13:00 - 16:00 Workshop B: Intelligent Pigging (IP) technology for meeting regulatory requirements

IP has matured in the last few years. IP generates reams and reams of data, the use of which is normally limited to a few individuals. On the contrary this data should be a shared asset.

At this workshop you will learn about:

  • Using dual magnetic fields to locate stressed areas
  • Importance of first run success
  • Importance of effective interpretation of IP results
  • Co-relation of IP results with other available data
  • How IP gives new life to old pipelines

You will leave the workshop with a greater understanding of:

  • Options available in various types of pigging technology
  • Short listing the options available in IP to suit the specific operators requirement
  • Use of various available software to suit the operators needs
  • Use of IP data for “fitness-for-purpose”

Wednesday 25th February 2009

09:00 - 12:00 Workshop C: Improving processes for effective corrosion and cracking prevention by implementing advanced protection and repair solutions

Prof. Dr. Eng. M.M. El-Gammal will on behalf of himself and Dr. El-Gammal (Jr.) be delivering and discussing the main assets of integrity in pipelines industry giving and highlighting examples from real life practice. Dr. H. El-Naggar will deal in detail with the description of the application of risk analysis adaptive to pipelines and tunnels integrity.

At this workshop you will learn:

  • That the leak before break is not the right design method to be applied to pipeline construction and industrial projects
  • How tunneling is one of the best future solutions to shorten the distance, is safer and could reduce pipelines problems
  • Accidents from industrial fields will be the best source to gain experience of not repeating the same fault twice

You will leave the workshop with a greater understanding of:

  • How to be aware of the design of pipelines to the best of the codes and for a sighted environment period
  • How hazard effects due to leak, explosions, hammering forces and anchorage in pipelines should all be brought to a minimum level
  • How to safely limit hazards by proper quality assurance and quality control standards

Expert Workshop Leader:

Prof. Dr. Moustafa Mohammed El-Gammal
Emeritus Professor, Faculty of Engineering and Consultant Engineer, Corrosion and Protection Systems Designer
University of Alexandria, Egypt

Prof. Dr. El-Gammal is in the Who’s Who, International Encyclopedia, Science and Engineering, 2006/2007, - 21st Scientists of the World, IBC-International Biographical Cambridge Research Centre–2007. He is the Ex- Head of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, Alexandria University and the Ex Head of 8th Committee of Professorships and Associates- Supreme Council of Egyptian Universities. He is offering consultancy work in fields of corrosion protection systems designs. He is also, a consultant for well reputed companies in Egypt, irrigation projects, water siphons and marine structures as well as off shore platforms and deep sea pipelines.

13:00 - 16:00 Workshop D: Improving maintenance and rehabilitation techniques applied to aged pipelines via deploying new age technological and strategic solutions

  • Cost implications of downtime for pipelines on overall production
  • Implementing solutions that avoid interruptions in the operations
  • Cost efficient solutions to ensure quality and safe maintenance of pipelines during operations
  • Evaluating integrity of exisiting pipelines and costs associated with repairs and rehabilitation
  • Reducing costs by replacing pipelines with better quality constructions in severely damaged pipelines for better return on investments
  • Conducting detailed assessments on construction and maintenance for higher production
